Background of the Study
Fact-checking has emerged as a critical tool for combating misinformation and safeguarding media credibility in an era of rampant fake news. In Sokoto North Local Government Area, Sokoto State, fact-checking mechanisms play an essential role in verifying information disseminated by journalists, social media platforms, and other sources. Effective fact-checking ensures the accuracy of news, mitigates the spread of falsehoods, and promotes public trust in media. However, challenges such as inadequate resources, political interference, and limited public awareness undermine the effectiveness of fact-checking efforts (Okoro & Ibrahim, 2024; Musa, 2023). This study evaluates the effectiveness of fact-checking mechanisms in Sokoto North, focusing on their impact on media credibility and public trust.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing importance of fact-checking, its implementation in Sokoto North faces numerous obstacles, including limited institutional support, lack of professional training, and public apathy toward verified information. These challenges hinder the ability of media organizations to counter misinformation effectively, contributing to the erosion of public trust in journalism. While global studies highlight the potential of fact-checking to enhance media credibility, localized research on its effectiveness in Sokoto North remains scarce (Adebayo & Suleiman, 2023; Bello, 2024). This study addresses this gap by investigating the effectiveness of fact-checking mechanisms in the region.
